Maidu
Little League All-Star Selection Procedures
(updated by the Board of Directors 3/03)
It is critical to note that being named to represent Maidu Little League on an All-Star team is a privilege and not a right. It should reward those players who have had a successful season on the field, and are being recognized for their efforts.
All-Star
selections:
The Major division Player Agent shall be responsible for conducting the all-star
selection process for the Major and 9& 10 year old All Star teams. To be
eligible to participate on one of these all-star teams, a player must have participated
in 50% or more of the games played by his/her team. Players being considered
for an all-star team must be available to participate in the practice schedule
and game schedule for all-stars as set out by the manager of that respective
all-star team.
9&10
All Star Voting:
Prior to the end of the regular season game schedule for the Minor and Major
division teams, a tryout shall be held for all 9 and 10 year old players who
are nominated for consideration for the 9&10 all-star team. Managers of
all Minor and Major teams will nominate players from their team who have had
a successful season, who meet the playing time requirement, and who will commit
to be available for practices and games late into the month of July.
The Major and Minor division Player Agents shall conduct a tryout session for these players, using the same criteria as the tryouts used for player selection. All Major division managers must be present at this tryout session to grade players in preparation for the all-star selections.
At least one week prior to the All-Star selections, the Minor Player Agent, working with the Major Player Agent, shall coordinate a rating process of all Minor division all-star candidates. Each Minor manager will be given a list of all nominated players, and he/she will be asked to rank those players 1 thru…., and submit those rankings to the Minor Player Agent. Those rankings will be tallied, giving 1 point to the lowest ranked player from a manager’s list and continuing up to the value of the number of players on the list for the highest ranked player. The high and low scores on each player will be eliminated, and the remaining scores from each manager will be added together to get a final ranking for the Minor players from the Minor managers. (If 15 Minor players are nominated, the player ranked first on a given manager’s list will receive 15 points, the second-ranked player will receive 14 points, etc.) This ranking is informational only, giving the Major managers who will vote for the 9&10 all-star team a ranked list of players from the managers who saw those players play all year. At the all-star selection meeting, the Major Player Agent will share the top 10 to 15 names and point totals from this list with the Major managers prior to their vote.
Voting for the All-Star teams will take place at a time and place to be determined by the President and the Major Player Agent. Attendance by each Major manager is mandatory.
There shall be 12 members on the 9&10 year old all-star team, with players to be selected by secret ballot by the Major division managers. Prior to the vote, the Minor managers top 10-15 list will be shared with the managers, and each manager will be given a few minutes, if desired, to discuss the players who have been nominated. Once that discussion is complete, each Manager will be given a ballot which includes the names of all nominated players (both from Major and Minor division teams). Each manager will then rank those players from 1 through … and submit their ballot. Points will be assigned in reverse order as described above, the high and low score for each player will be eliminated, and the points will be totaled for each player. The six players with the highest point totals will be selected to the team. The process will then be repeated for the remaining nominated players, with the top two players being named to the team. These selections will leave a roster of eleven players. (If there is a tie for the eleventh position, a unanimous vote from the managers will allow both players to be named to the team and the roster will be expanded to 13.)
Once the initial roster has been named, the manager will be announced. The manager will have been approved for that position by a vote of the board, after recommendations by an executive committee established to evaluate managerial candidates. Once named, the manager of the all-star team will have the option of naming the final player to the roster, from the list of remaining nominated players. The manager will also select two coaches to assist him/her with the team.
Majors All Star Voting:
Two weeks prior to the end of the regular season game schedule Major division
teams, each Major division manager will be required to nominate players from
their team who have had a successful season, who meet the playing time requirement,
and who will commit to be available for practices and games late into the month
of July.
There shall be 12 members on the Major all-star team, with the first six players to be selected by a vote of the players in the league, and with the next five players to be selected by secret ballot by the Major division managers.
On a date to be determined by the President and Major Player Agent, each player in the Major division will receive a ballot listing all Major players, and will be asked to vote for six as all-stars. Those votes shall be tallied and the top six vote getters will be selected to the all-star team. At the beginning of the selection process for the Major all-star team, the six names will be presented to the managers. If a player has been selected who is not worthy of an all-star selection, the managers will have the ability to remove that name, but only by a unanimous vote from the managers.
The six names of the players who have been selected will be crossed out on the all-star ballots, and each manager will be given a few minutes, if desired, to discuss the remaining players who have been nominated. Once that discussion is complete, each Manager will be given a ballot which includes the names of all remaining nominated players. Each manager will then rank those players from 1 through … and submit their ballot. Points will be assigned in reverse order as described above, the high and low score for each player will be eliminated, and the points will be totaled for each player. The three players with the highest point totals will be selected to the team, and those three will be added to the six players selected by the players.
Junior and Senior All-Stars
The manager of the Junior and/or Senior all-star team shall be approved for
that position by a vote of the board, after recommendations by an executive
committee established to evaluate managerial candidates. The manager will select
two coaches to assist him/her with the team. The Junior and/or Senior all-star
teams will carry between 12 and 14 players.
If there are enough players in either of there divisions to make all-star voting necessary, the process shall follow the same formula as the Major division procedures outlined above, unless there are three or fewer teams, in which case the 9 & 10 procedures would apply. In either case, unless there are five or more teams from which all-stars are being selected, the process of throwing out high and low scores will not be used.
